Roles & careers in semantic enforcement

The people who run provable governance.

A conditional claim, not a forecast: if provable semantic governance architectures become widely deployed, then the separations of authority they enforce imply the corresponding organisational roles. Whether these become recognised professions depends on adoption, which is not assumed here.

Where the roles come from

Three properties of the architecture generate the jobs.

01

Separation of duties is architectural, not procedural

Enforced by signing keys, permissioned surfaces and bounded views, so each separation is a distinct job.

02

Every verdict carries a guarantee class, and each needs a different competence

Authoring a decidable rule, certifying a calibrated lane, and adjudicating a confidence-scaled inference are three different professions.

03

The system is designed to disagree with itself, and humans staff the disagreements

The review queues are load-bearing, not a stopgap before better automation.

The role map

The same seats recur across every deployment, under different names.

That recurrence is the evidence they are structural, not domain artifacts.

The role families

Twelve families. Each with a job, a new element, and an analogue.

1 · Semantic Constraint Engineer

Translates policy, statute or mandate into a machine-checkable envelope; owns the buildable-now vs experiment-required decision.

New: the authored artifact is a calibrated region of an embedding space. Analogue: requirements engineers and safety-case authors crossed with knowledge engineers. Sub-role: Domain-Expert Verifier signs that a vector encodes their concept.

2 · Governance Calibration Engineer

Produces, maintains and defends miss-rate certificates (α at δ) via distribution-free risk control; the closest thing to a licensed-professional trajectory.

New: the measured object is a semantic detector. Analogue: actuaries, metrologists, T&E engineers.

3 · Governance Release Manager

Signed baselines, pending queues, release events, version pinning; owns the promotion gate and the disposition-regression review.

Analogue: configuration managers / change-control chairs in aerospace and pharma, with cryptographic evidence.

4 · Governance Operations Analyst

The live seat; reads dispositions correctly (nominal vs novel-but-authorised vs recognised drift), manages graceful degradation.

New: the monitored object is meaning. Analogue: air-traffic controllers, grid operators, SOC analysts.

5 · Governance Review Officer + Trajectory Reviewer

Staffs the abstention queues; the Trajectory Reviewer adjudicates an inference with a mandate to disagree. Distinct: the Override Authority, a senior sparsely-used seat, every act a ledger event.

New: a role whose product is a reasoned disagreement.

6 · Attestation Infrastructure Engineer

HSM ceremonies, measured boot, interlock config, N+1 pools with quorum, WORM ledgers; the distinctive duty is adversarial custody.

Analogue: HSM/PKI ops, payment-network security officers, SIS engineers.

7 · Oracle Lane Manager Most novel

Governs an untrusted external corpus through per-adapter certification, capability declarations, composition policy, and the commercial-legal interface.

Analogue: none clean.

8 · Consent Registry Administrator

Verified consent intake, scope/expiry, revocation with ledger-attested effect; strict separation of authoring surface from runtime view.

Analogue: registrars, rights-management clerks, upgraded to cryptographic evidence.

9 · Enforcement Relationship Manager

Manages the adversarial-yet-commercial tension with the governed party: the bounded view, the fail-closed contract, reconciliation events.

Analogue: clearing-house / exchange relationship managers.

10 · Governance Inspector / Attestation Auditor

Re-checks a token's signature and chain without seeing raw contents; the seed of a third-party profession (attestation audit firms : governance tokens :: financial auditors : accounts).

Analogue: financial auditors, notified bodies.

11 · Governance Oversight Officer

The commissioning seat; declares appetite, consumes roll-ups, accepts residual risk, owns that a token does not discharge meaningful human control.

Analogue: CROs, designated accountable persons.

12 · Governance Counsel / Regulatory-Semantics Analyst

Maps statutes onto constraints, clears oracle ToS adapter-by-adapter, keeps obligation-to-envelope traceability current.

Deliverable: a maintained mapping the concept cards cite, law as configuration.

Cross-cutting observations

The guarantee-class vocabulary is the shared professional language

Every role must answer "which guarantee did you buy?"; mis-stating a guarantee class is the field's equivalent of an auditor signing accounts they haven't examined.

The architecture converts trust relationships into jobs

Headcount is predictable from the trust topology, not transaction volume.

Two roles are genuinely without precedent

The Oracle Lane Manager and the Trajectory Reviewer.

Minimum viable org chart

Authoring, runtime, infrastructure, governed party, oversight, and inspector are the six seats no deployment can do without; inspection must never consolidate inward.
